OVSD-Letter from Dr. Hansen on School Closures

April 1, 2020

Parent Update #13 - Distance Learning To Continue Through The End Of The School Year

Dear OVSD Parents,

I’d like to provide you with an important update. Although we just announced an extension of our school closures yesterday, there have been new developments in this very fluid situation.  Today, Governor Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced an expectation that Distance Learning continue through the end of the school year. This is part of the statewide effort to flatten the curve and reduce the spread of COVID-19 as the number of hospital cases is expected to surge in May.

In consultation with Board of Trustees’ President Gina Clayton-Tarvin, we have made the determination to close OVSD school campuses through the end of the school year.  To be clear, the 2019-20 school year is not over, we are just transitioning from classroom instruction to Distance Learning. We will now focus all of our efforts on delivering the most robust and effective Distance Learning possible for our students. The good news is that we are already on our way! We had a great launch to our Distance Learning today, and we have created a solid foundation for this exciting, new method of teaching and learning to flourish.

We remain committed to ensuring students and families are supported during this challenging time, including continuing to provide free Grab-N-Go meals for children in need.

Please stay tuned, as we expect to receive additional guidance this week from the California Department of Education, as more details become available.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carol Hansen

Superintendent
